Celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi. The two weeks long chitharai Festival is one of the biggest clebrations in Madurai Tamil Nadu. It reenacts the weeding of Lord Sundareswara ( Lord Shiva ) and Goddess Meenakshi ( Sister of Lord Vishnu ) Traditionally Lord Vishnu has high castes followers while Lord Shiva is worshipped by those of lower castes. What it is interesting to note that Meenakshis marriage to Lord Shiva unites people of all castes hence bridging the casts Gap . Festival begins on the fifth day of bright half ( waxing moon from new moon to full moon ) on the traditional Tamil month. Chitharai it's falls in April or May on the English Gregorian Calendar.
